If you are seeking an improvement to your smile, look no further than bonding and veneers. The two popular cosmetic options are similar in some regards, but have their definite differences. Here, we will go through the basics of both, why a patient may choose one option over the other, and other related relevant information to help you make an educated decision about the future of your smile.
Here at Goochland Dentistry, we go above and beyond to prepare our patients for what they can expect from their dental visit, with open and thorough communication and an honest approach to dentistry. We always treat you like family, and only recommend services that make sense for your goals and expectations. If bonding and/or veneers will improve your smile, we will let you know how we can proceed. If these options won’t benefit you, we will work with you to find another more suitable solution.
If you have been shy about flashing your smile, both bonding and veneers can improve your confidence, giving you even more of a reason to show off your pearly whites. There is no reason to hold off on expressing yourself due to less-than-ideal teeth. We are ready to get you to the next level, and you will be excited to smile again – whether it’s for “selfies” or sheer satisfaction!
Both bonding and veneers can improve stains and discoloration, misalignment, gaps and spaces, and cracks and chips in the teeth. These common issues can be subtle or substantial, on just one tooth or in a consecutive set. Serious crookedness or wide gaps between teeth may be better suited for correction with braces or aligners, but bonding and veneers can address less severe cosmetic issues. They are not meant to cover up cavities or hide decay, as these dental issues must be addressed accordingly to prevent infection, tooth loss, and other potentially serious complications.
If budget is a concern for you, we suggest that you opt for the less-expensive bonding. While the bonding won’t last as long as veneers will, the outcome cosmetically is astounding. Still, bonding will last a good seven years when proper dental hygiene habits are practiced and patients refrain from consuming foods and drinks that can stain the bonding material.
Bonding uses a resin material that matches the tooth’s color and shine. The process can be completed in just one dental session, making it much quicker and less complex than the veneer application process. The tooth is slightly adjusted so the bonding won’t protrude, and the resin material is shaped to fit the area in question and hardened into place with a UV light to set permanently. The entire process is painless and relatively simple, and you will leave the office with a brand new smile.
Veneers are made of high-quality porcelain, making them last much longer than the resin-based bonding. Unlike bonding, the process takes more time to complete, with a few appointments to get the full process completed – from measurements to the final setting. We take digital impressions of your teeth to send to a lab for uniquely customized veneers that look incredibly natural and fit your mouth impeccably. Veneers last far longer than bonding – up to 20 years when cared for well. We can give you practical tips to keep your veneers in tip-top shape for the long haul.
Whether you select bonding or veneers after our initial consultation, know that you are in good hands with the caring and compassionate Goochland Dentistry team. We have a great deal of experience and training with these two cosmetic procedures, and assure you that the results we’ll achieve will look natural and feel just like your real teeth.
