Is Teeth Whitening Safe?

A beautiful woman is smiling

Nobody wants yellow or dulled teeth. Instead, people want to smile, knowing that their pearly whites really are, in fact, white. Unfortunately, it can be really difficult to keep and maintain white teeth. From the foods and drinks that we consume to the medications we take, yellowing teeth can seem inevitable.

One effective way to keep your teeth white is by teeth whitening treatment. Because of the popularity of white teeth, teeth whitening services are the most common cosmetic dental procedure. Many people, however, are hesitant to try teeth whitening treatment because they aren’t sure if it’s safe.

In short, teeth whitening is safe if done correctly, but you can damage your teeth or cause tooth sensitivity if the whitening is performed incorrectly. To find out exactly how to whiten your teeth safely, read on.

Is Teeth Whitening Treatment Safe?

Teeth whitening is safe if it is performed correctly. Though it can be easy to run to the drugstore for cheap whitening options, these solutions are often short-lived, ineffective, and damaging to your teeth. This is especially true if you already have sensitive teeth.

The only way that you can ensure that your teeth whitening treatment is performed safely is by going to a licensed dental professional. Professionals will give you a whitening treatment that is not only safe, but also effective and reliable.

On top of the safety features of professional dental whitening, seeing a professional is way more effective. Over-the-counter options will only change your teeth color by a shade, if at all. Professional treatments can actually remove staining and discoloration, leaving your teeth white and healthy again.

How Can I Prevent Yellowing?

The only way that you can prevent yellowing is by being diligent in your oral care. Obviously, this includes brushing your teeth at least twice a day and flossing once a day. Doing these basic steps will protect your white teeth.

For people who are more prone to yellow teeth, you may also need to change your diet. Certain foods are not conducive to a white smile. Wine, tea, coffee, and acids are all common foods and drinks that cause your teeth to yellow faster. Avoiding these substances is a great way to keep your teeth white and prevent them from yellowing.

If you can’t avoid these substances entirely, then you should brush your teeth immediately after consuming them. For example, relentless coffee drinkers will want to brush their teeth immediately after finishing their morning cup.

What Are Some Teeth Whitening Treatment Options?

If your teeth are already yellow, then the only thing you can do is to whiten them. Like we’ve already discussed, going to a drugstore for over-the-counter options may be tempting, but you’re likely not going to see the results you want with this option. Instead, it is best to go to a professional for results that actually last.

1. In-Office Tray Treatments

One of the most effective professional teeth whitening options is in-office tray treatments. Here’s how it will work: A dental hygienist will prepare your teeth before the whitening process. Then, trays will be filled with a whitening gel and placed in your mouth. Depending on your mouth and the gel used, you will sit with the tray in your mouth for a certain amount of time.

Once the time is up, you’re free to go home and go about your day. The entire process is painless, yet you can see results in under an hour. One of the most effective gels for this sort of treatment is the Opalescence gel.

2. Whitening Toothpastes

Though you won’t see very noticeable results with whitening toothpaste, it can be helpful for preventative and treatment measures, especially after an in-office tray treatment. There are a variety of whitening toothpastes on the market that you can choose from today.

Whitening toothpaste should be used with caution because they can be painful for those with sensitive teeth. After your in-office tray treatment, you might want to incorporate a whitening toothpaste in your routine two or three times a week just to maintain your white smile.

3. Whitening Strips and Gels

You may also want to maintain your white teeth using over-the-counter whitening strips or gels. Often, these materials will be peroxide-based. Follow the directions on the box carefully when using either product. Whitening strips and gels are often really harsh. Those with sensitive teeth should avoid this option.

Which Whitening Option is Right for Me?

Since over-the-counter whitening agents can be harmful to your teeth, it is always best to go with a licensed professional. Although opting for a professional whitening treatment will cost a bit more upfront, it will be better in the long run since it will not harm your teeth and actually ends with the results you want.

To find out more about your teeth whitening needs, consult a licensed professional to give you advice and treatment options.
